In March 1903, just after his 16th birthday, he went to work for Crompton & Evan's Union Bank. That bank was acquired by Parr's Bank in 1914, and Douglas became an employee of the larger bank.

In June 1917 Douglas left his job in the bank's Bakewell branch to go on military service. Private Laurence Douglas of the South Staffordshire Regiment was killed in action in France on 24 March 1918. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Ella Louise, whom he had married in 1913.
