Malcolm Douglas was born on 6 January 1892. His father was a bank worker, later manager of Shrewsbury branch of London City & Midland Bank. In September 1909, when Douglas was 17 years old, he followed his father into banking, albeit in a different bank. He started as an apprentice at Leeds branch of National Provincial Bank of England. When he completed his apprenticeship three years later he was promoted to a clerkship there, and in July 1913 he transferred to Chester branch.

By March 1915 Douglas was on military service. He rose to the rank of Major in the Machine Gun Corps and was mentioned in dispatches. He died of pneumonia on 17 November 1918, six days after the signing of the Armistice. He was 26 years old.
