Martin Charles Diggens was born on 13 October 1881. In July 1900, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In September 1914 Diggens left his job as a clerk at the bank's Worthing branch to join the army. In September 1915 he was commissioned into the Royal Sussex Regiment, and by 1916 he held the rank of Captain. He was killed in action in France on 30 June 1916. He was 34 years old.
