Robert Ivan Doncaster was born in Nottingham in 1897, the son of Robert Doncaster, director of a screw manufacturing company, and his wife Gertrude. In December 1913 he went to work for Crompton & Evans' Union Bank at its Buxton branch. That bank was acquired by Parr's Bank in 1914, and Doncaster became an employee of the larger bank.

 

During the First World War Doncaster joined the army. By 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was 19 years old.
