Colin Hyde Edwards was born on 25 January 1897, the son of Frederick William Hyde Edwards, a merchant and officer in the Surrey Volunteers, and his wife Julia Annie. In January 1914, the day after his 17th birthday, Edwards went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1914 Edwards, still only 17, left his job at the bank's Weybridge branch to accept a commission in the territorial force. He later transferred to the East Surrey Regiment. Second Lieutenant Colin Hyde Edwards died in France on 22 May 1917. He was 20 years old.
