Griffith Oliver Edwards was born in Hackney on 26 November 1894, the son of Richard Oliver Edwards, a tailor, and his wife Mary Anne. In May 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1915 Edwards left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to join the army. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers, and had been awarded the Military Cross for commanding two platoons in the absence of his company commander during a campaign. Second Lieutenant Edwards was killed in action in Belgium on 20 September 1917. He was 22 years old.
