Horace England was born in Catford, London, on 25 May 1898, the son of Alfred Joseph England and his wife Clara Louise. On his 17th birthday in 1915 England went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

In January 1917 England left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Bloomsbury branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He died in Belgium on 20 September 1917. He was 19 years old.
