Hubert Victor Ellis was born in Derbyshire in 1893, the son of Herbert Ellis, a bank worker, and his wife Claudia. After leaving school he followed his father into banking, becoming an apprentice in Sheffield Banking Co at its Sheffield branch.

 

During the First World War Ellis left his job at the bank's Sheffield branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the York and Lancaster Regiment. He died in France on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was 23 years old.
