John Victor Elderkin was born on 3 May 1887, the son of William and Katharine Elderkin. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Basford branch.

 

In the first months of the First World War Elderkin left the bank to go on military service. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and on the Somme, and by 1917 was a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. He died in Belgium on 23 September 1917. He was 30 years old.

 

John Elderkin is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
