William Else

William Edwin Else was born in Derbyshire in 1893, the son of Charles Joseph Else, a farmer, and his wife Hannah Scott Else. From about 1912 he worked for Parr's Bank.

 

In September 1914 Else left his job at the bank's Matlock branch to join the army. He was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) in February 1915, and by 1918 held the rank of Captain in the same regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 3 January 1918. He was 24 years old and left a widow, Ada Evelyn, whom he had married in 1916.

 

William Else is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Bakewell branch.
