Herbert John Fletcher (known as Bert) was born in Gloucestershire in 1896, the son of John and Mary Jane Fletcher. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Dewsbury Union Bank branch.

 

During the First World War Fletcher joined the army, serving as a Private in the Gloucestershire Regiment. He died in France on 25 April 1918. He was 21 years old. His younger brother George also served in the war, and died of wounds in 1919.

 

Herbert Fletcher is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
