Laurence Bernard Forrest was born in Pemberton in 1898, the son of Canon Edward Francis Forrest, a clergyman in the Church of England, and his wife Florence. In about 1914 he went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Forrest left his job at the bank's Hindley branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action in France on 20 May 1917. He was 19 years old.
