William Edgar Ford was born in Chesterfield in 1875, the son of William Ford, a railway wagon builder, and his wife Sarah. In December 1891 he went to work for Crompton & Evans' Union Bank. In 1914 that bank was acquired by Parr's Bank, and Ford became an employee of the larger bank.

 

During the First World War Ford left his job at the bank's Chesterfield branch to go on military service. Corporal William Edgar Ford of the York and Lancaster Regiment was killed in action in France on 15 November 1916. He was 41 years old.

 

William Ford is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Chesterfield branch.
