Alan Greathead was born on 2 January 1880. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Princes Street office, and was a member of the bank's staff sports club.

Early in the First World War Greathead left the bank to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Captain in the Royal Fusiliers. He died in France on 20 November 1917. He was 27 years old.
