Andrew Owen Griffiths was born on 4 March 1894, the son of Evan Griffiths and his wife Minnie Emily. He was educated at Alleyn's School, Dulwich.

 

On his 17th birthday in 1911 Griffiths went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club, and played for one of the club's football teams.

 

During the First World War Griffiths left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Chancery Lane branch to go on military service. Corporal Andrew Owen Griffiths of the Royal Sussex Regiment was killed in action in France on 27 September 1915. He was 21 years old.
