Ernest William Gould was born on 10 June 1898 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, the son of William Henry Gould and his wife Alice Gertrude. On his 17th birthday in 1915 Gould went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In December 1916 Gould left his job at the bank's West Worthing branch to join the army. Second Lieutenant Ernest William Gould of the South Lancashire Regiment, attached to the Somerset Light Infantry, died in Palestine on 10 April 1918. He was 19 years old.
