Frank Gartside was born in Chorley, Lancashire on 12 May 1893, the son of John Henry Gartside, a painter, and his wife Ann. In September 1908 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

 

In May 1916 Gartside left his job as a clerk at the bank's Chorley branch to go on military service. Serjeant Frank Gartside of the Monmouthshire Regiment, attached to the Gold Coast Regiment, West African Frontier Force, died of dysentery in East Africa on 11 May 1918, the day before his 25th birthday.
