George Gilchrist

George Gilchrist was born on 8 September 1896, the son of George Gilchrist, a coach trimmer, and his wife Thomson Gilchrist. In March 1912, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kilmarnock branch. He became a clerk there in March 1915, and in October of the same year transferred to the bank's Glasgow office.
Gilchrist left the bank to go on military service in January 1916, initially in the Highland Light Infantry, later in the Royal Engineers and finally in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Private George Gilchrist was killed in action in Flanders on 4 October 1917. He was 21 years old.
George Gilchrist is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
