Gerald Parker Goldstraw was born on 2 May 1895, the son of a Primitive Methodist minister. He was educated at Runcorn County Secondary School and Nantwich and Acton Grammar School.

 

In October 1912, when Goldstraw was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Deal branch. His manager there remarked 'qualifications much above the average. Business habits excellent.'

 

In September 1915 Goldstraw left the bank to go on military service as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 4 October 1916. He was 21 years old.
