John Dunthorne Garnham was born in Woolwich on 6 March 1897, the son of John James Garnham, a civil servant, and his wife Frances Rosa. In February 1915, when he was 17 years old, Garnham went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In January 1916 Garnham left his job as a clerk at the bank's London West End office to go on military service, initially in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) and later in the London Regiment. He served in France, Salonika and Palestine. Private John Dunthorne Garnham was killed in action on 7 November 1917. He was 20 years old.

 

John Garnham is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London St James & Piccadilly branch.
