Laurence John Littlewood Gaul was born on 20 June 1890, the son of James John Gaul and his wife Ellen Louisa Mary Gaul. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Chiswick branch.

 

Early in the First World War Gaul left the bank to go on military service. In March 1916 he was commissioned into the army pay department. Lieutenant Laurence John Littlewood Gaul died in France on 12 April 1917. He was 26 years old.

 

Laurence Gaul is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office and on another held at NatWest Group Archives.
