Robert Buchanan Wilkes Gosse was born on 19 May 1889, the son of Hope Wilkes Gosse, a physician and surgeon, and his wife Mary Wilkes Gosse. In September 1908 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Cheadle, Staffordshire branch. He transferred to Stone branch in 1910, and in 1913 was promoted to a clerkship there.

 

In September 1914 Gosse left the bank to join the army, initially in the South Staffordshire Regiment. In October 1915 he was commissioned into the Cheshire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Robert Buchanan Wilkes Gosse died in France on 1 April 1917. He was 27 years old.
