Sidney James Garside was born in Chorlton, Lancashire, in 1894, the son of James Garside, a building surveyor, and his wife Mary. He worked for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Garside left his job at the bank's Eccles branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 31 July 1916. He was 21 years old.

 

Sidney Garside is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Eccles branch.
