William Millar Gourlay was born on 19 September 1899, the son of Robert Gourlay, a railway clerk, and his wife Helen. In May 1914, when he was 14 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Burntisland branch in Fife.

 

During the First World War Gourlay left the bank to go on military service. Second Lieutenant William Millar Gourlay of the Royal Air Force was killed in a flying accident on 1 October 1918. He was 19 years old.

 

William Gourlay is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
