Arthur Orr Hay was born in Edinburgh in 1899, the eldest son of David Hay, a coach body maker, and his wife Eliza Orr Hay. In August 1914, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Granton branch.

 

During the First World War Hay joined the army, serving as a Private in the Lothians and Border Horse. He drowned on 14 September 1917. He was 18 years old.

 

Arthur Hay is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh
