Arthur Hickman

Arthur James Hickman was born on 28 August 1888, the son of Thomas Hickman, a timber merchant. In January 1906, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Wolverhampton branch. After completing his apprenticeship he remained there as a clerk, and in July 1910 he moved to Newport, Shropshire branch. In August 1912 he moved to Birmingham Spinning Hill branch, and then in January 1914 to South Shields branch. His manager there described him to head office as 'a useful officer. Very correct and has a good general knowledge. Will do well for the bank.'

 

In November 1915 Hickman joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 13 November 1916. He was 28 years old.
