Benjamin Herbert

Bank: National Provincial Bank of England

Place of work: Cardiff branch

Died: 3 August 1918

Benjamin Charles Esmond Herbert was born on 9 June 1894, the son of Benjamin Herbert, a commercial traveller, and his wife Ellen. Herbert's late uncle on his mother's side had been a bank manager for National Provincial Bank of England, and it was possibly through this family connection that Herbert secured an apprenticeship with the bank. He started work in Cardiff branch in July 1912, not long after his 16th birthday.

In January 1916 Herbert left the bank to join the army. By 1918 he was a Corporal in the Army Service Corps. He was accidentally drowned in Egypt on 3 August 1918. He was 24 years old.
