Charles Cecil Holtom was born in London in 1885, the son of medical student Charles John Holtom, later a surgeon, and his wife Florence Caroline. In March 1910 Holtom married Helen Kathleen Casey. The couple lived in West Yorkshire.

 

From about 1913 Holtom worked for Bradford District Bank at its Huddersfield branch. Outside work, he was secretary of Huddersfield Playgoers' Society.

 

Early in the First World War Holtom joined the army. He was commissioned in May 1915, and in 1917 transferred from the West Yorkshire Regiment to the Machine Gun Corps. He was later promoted to Lieutenant. He was killed in action in Palestine on 31 October 1917. He was 32 years old.
