Gilbert Gordon Howard was born on 25 September 1897, the son of Septimus Carolus Howard and his wife Edith Mary. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Princes Street office. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.

 

During the First World War Howard joined the army, and by 1918 he was a Lieutenant in the Gloucestershire Regiment. He died in France on 29 October 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 21 years old.

 

Gilbert Howard is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office and another held at NatWest Group Archives.
