James Holmes

James Holmes was born on 13 July 1888 in Plumstead, London, the son of George Edward Holmes and his wife Margaret Jane. In August 1905, when he was 17 years old, Holmes went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Holmes became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In April 1916 Holmes left his job as a clerk at the bank's London West End office to go on military service, becoming a Corporal in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He died in France on 26 August 1918. He was 30 years old.

 

James Holmes is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London St James & Piccadilly branch.
