John William Haygarth was born in Yorkshire in 1894, the son of Robert Haygarth, a bootmaker, and his wife Elizabeth. He worked for Glyn, Mills, Currie & Co.

 

In September 1914 Haygarth left his job at the bank's Country Office to join the army. By 1915 he was a Lance Corporal in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 25 September 1915. He was 21 years old.
