Leslie Buckley Hughes was born in Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne on 10 April 1897, the son of William Hughes, a registrar of births and deaths, and his wife Sara. He worked for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a clerk at its Manchester head office.

 

During the First World War Hughes left the bank to join the army, serving as a Driver in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died in Salonika, Greece, on 15 September 1916. He was 19 years old.
