Marcus Hopwood was born on 25 November 1887. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Alton branch.

 

Early in the First World War Hopwood left the bank to go on military service, and by 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 3 September 1916. He was 29 years old and left a widow, Ellen, whom he had married in 1912.

 

Marcus Hopwood is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
