William Samuel Hillman was born on 18 May 1896, the son of William Hillman, a policeman, and his wife Margaret. In August 1913, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1915 Hillman left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to join the army, initially in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), and later in the London Regiment. Private Hillman was killed in action on 23 March 1918. He was 21 years old.

 

William Hillman is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
