William Ewart Holdsworth was born in Scarborough in 1898, the son of Arthur Holdsworth, a commercial traveller, and his wife Clara. In about 1915 he went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Holdsworth left his job at the bank's Radstock branch to join the army, serving initially in the Devonshire Regiment and later in the Gloucestershire Regiment. Private William Ewart Holdsworth was killed in action in France on 24 April 1918. He was 19 years old.
