David Imrie was born in Glasgow in 1893, the son of Alexander Imrie, a dairyman, and his wife Jeanie. In May 1909, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Garscube Cross branch. He transferred to Glasgow Bridgeton Cross branch in January 1912, and to Glasgow St Vincent Street branch in July 1914.

During the First World War Imrie joined the army, becoming a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in France on 1 May 1917. Lance Corporal Abbot died on the Western Front on 20 September 1917.

David Imrie is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
