Henry Illing

Henry Stevens Illing was born in Southwark on 25 May 1892. In June 1909, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. The following month London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Illing became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1915 Illing left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Chiswick branch to join the army, initially in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) and later in the London Regiment. Private Illing died on 11 June 1917 of wounds received in action two days earlier. He was 25 years old.

 

Henry Illing is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Chiswick branch.
