Arthur Saunders Jones was born on 30 May 1899, the son of a vicar and his wife. He was educated at Christ's Hospital in Horsham, Sussex. In January 1916, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Chester branch.

 

In 1917 Jones joined the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force). He was temporarily commissioned in November that year. Second Lieutenant Arthur Saunders Jones was killed on 27 September 1918. He was 19 years old.
