Cyril Gordon Jones was born on 16 September 1892, the son of the Reverend David Jones, a clergyman in Flitcham, Norfolk, and his wife Emily Josephine. In June 1910, when Jones was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Great Yarmouth branch. After he completed his apprenticeship three years later he remained at Great Yarmouth as a clerk until July 1914, when he moved to Folkestone branch.

 

In November 1915 Jones joined the army, initially as a Private in the London Regiment. He was later commissioned into the Norfolk Regiment.

 

Lieutenant Cyril Gordon Jones was killed in France on 20 November 1917. He was 25 years old and left a widow, Doris Margaret, whom he had married in January 1917.
