Godfrey Johnson

Godfrey Johnson was born on 16 April 1887, the son of Charles Johnson and his wife Emily. In March 1905, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and Johnson became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In September 1914 Johnson joined the army, leaving his job at the bank's London Forest Gate branch to go on active service as a Private in the London Regiment. He died on 11 June 1917 of wounds received in action. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Elizabeth, whom he had married in May 1916.

 

Godfrey Johnson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Stratford Broadway branch.
