Hylton Rodney Jolliffe was born on 13 May 1892, the son of a Wesleyan minister and his wife. He was educated at Portsmouth Secondary School. At the beginning of 1910 he went to work for London City & Midland Bank. In July 1913 he moved to National Provincial Bank of England, taking up a post as clerk at its London Oxford Street branch.

 

In October 1915 Jolliffe joined the army, becoming a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 26 September 1917. He was 25 years old.
