Joseph Higgin Jobling was born in Todmorden, Lancashire, on 12 March 1894, the son of Thomas Edward Jobling, a bank clerk, and his wife Priscilla. In July 1910 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

 

In January 1915 Jobling left his job at the bank's Heywood branch to join the army, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers. By 1917 he held the rank of Lieutenant. He died in Flanders on 1 December 1917. He was 23 years old.
