Richard Walter James was born in London in 1895, the son of John and Emily Clara James. From about 1911 he worked for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War James left his job in the bank's head office general manager's department to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the East Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 8 May 1917. He was 22 years old.

 

Richard James is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
