Roger Llewelyn Jones was born at Heulwen, Bala, on 19 October 1891, the son of W E Jones, a bank worker, and his wife Annie. In October 1908, just before his 17th birthday, he followed his late father into banking, albeit in a different bank. He started work as an apprentice at National Provincial Bank of England's Whitchurch branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, and was appointed to a clerkship at the same branch. In February 1912 he moved to Scunthorpe branch; in April 1913 to Bridgend; and in June 1915 to Cardiff Bute Docks branch.

 

In February 1916 Jones left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Middlesex Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 17 February 1917. He was 25 years old.
