William Arthur Lloyd Jones was born on 26 April 1899, the son of the Reverend Robert Jones, an Anglican clergyman, and his wife Margaret. He was educated at the County School in Llangefni, where his father was Rector, and at Llandovery College. In July 1915, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Llangefni branch.

 

In around June 1917 Jones joined the army, becoming a Private in the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was taken prisoner during the Battle of the Aisne in September 1918, and died at Darmstadt, Germany, on 15 September 1918. He was 19 years old.
