William Gladstone Jacques was born in Chesterfield in 1898, the son of William and Kate Jacques. In about 1914 he went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

In December 1916 Jacques left his job at the bank's Alfreton branch to join the army, initially as a Private in the London Regiment. He was later commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Second Lieutenant William Gladstone Jacques was killed in action in France on 17 October 1918. He was 20 years old.
