Basil Aubrey Kemp was born at New Cross, London, on 22 January 1898, the second son of Aubrey John Kemp, a stockbroker, and his wife Clara Georgina. He was educated at King's School Canterbury. On his 17th birthday in 1915 Kemp went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1915 Kemp left his job at the bank's London Southwark branch to join the army, initially in the Inns of Courts Officers Training Corps. In September 1916 he was transferred to an Officer Cadet Battalion, and in October 1916 was commissioned into the Middlesex Regiment. Second Lieutenant Basil Aubrey Kemp died in France on 3 May 1917. He was 19 years old.
