Leonard William Kingswell was born on 7 October 1895. He was educated at Alleyn's School, Dulwich. In March 1914, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In May 1915 Kingswell left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to join the army, initially in the London Regiment and later in the Hampshire Regiment. By 1918 he held the rank of Captain, and was on active service in France. Captain Kingswell was killed in action at Mericourt, France, on 26 March 1918. He was 22 years old.
