Richard Kirk was born on 7 February 1885. In September 1899 he went to work for Manchester & County Bank at its Stockport branch. He later worked at the bank's head office in Manchester.

 

At the outbreak of the First World War Kirk was mobilised for military service. By 1916 he was a Captain in the Cheshire Regiment, on active service in France, and had been awarded the Military Cross. He was killed in action at Beaumont Hamel, France, on 13 November 1916. He was 31 years old.
