Robert Murray Kay was born in Kirkcaldy on 19 June 1893, the son of a draper's traveller. He was educated at Kirkcaldy High School. In January 1910, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Clydesdale Bank. While there, he passed the examinations to become a Member of the Institute of Bankers in Scotland. In March 1914 he moved to National Provincial Bank of England, working at its North Shields branch. His manager there described him as 'all one could desire. Very good, takes an intelligent interest in his work, and means to get on.'

 

During the First World War Kay joined the army, serving as a Private in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 2 October 1915. He was 22 years old.
